Montessori education provides challenging learning for elementary children!  Through Montessori Teacher Preparation of Washington’s 6-9 DVD course, you will learn how to use the Montessori method in your elementary classroom.  Respect for and observation of the 6-9 child are the keys to this “new” way of learning.

This 100+ hour DVD Montessori training program covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Montessori Elementary Education
  • Geometry
  • Communication, Discipline and Classroom Management
  • Montessori Elementary Language Materials
  • Music for the Elementary Child
  • Montessori Elementary Math Materials
  • Cultural Materials:  Geography, History & Science

This course consists of three parts:

  • Phase I – academic
  • Phase II – internship
  • Phase III – application for MTPI (MTP International Distance Learning) certification

In Phase I you will:

  • Gain new concepts in the education of elementary children through reading Dr. Montessori’s books, hearing discussions of her ideas, and writing your own thoughts regarding her philosophy of education.
  • Watch 100+ hours of learning materials being presented by a master teacher.  You may keep the DVD as long as one month, re-running it until you have mastered the material and then return it.  At least 2 hours of DVD study should be completed for each 1-hour of taped material.
  • Proceed at your own pace, requesting the next DVD when you return the completed one.
  • Refine your knowledge and skills by completing 20 academic assignments.
  • Demonstrate your study of the materials by compiling 7 albums – Philosophy, Geometry, Math, Language, Geography, History and Science; and 3 notebooks – Music, Art and Cooking.  Ten MTPI decals will be provided to you by MTPI to unify your 10 manuals of learning.
  • Prove competency with the materials by attending a 1-week, full-day competency testing at Montessori Plus School in Kent any time during the year.  (Option:  Mrs. McClurkin may be able to fly to you at your expense to provide the review and testing at your own school.)

When your 20 written assignments and 10 manuals have been completed, you may apply for your academic certificate from MTPI, and begin Phase II.  Exceptions may be made for experienced persons to begin their internship concurrent to Phase I.

In Phase II you will prove competency in a Montessori classroom certified MTPI (MTP International Distance Learning).  You will:

  • Work and learn under an experienced Category A certified Montessori teacher.  (A Category A teacher holds a B.A., a national 6-9 Montessori teaching certificate and has one year’s teaching experience.)  Self-directed internships may be approved as well.
  • Complete a 10-month intern diary and a 400 hour internship.
  • Complete all of the requirements as outlined in the intern job description.
  • Send a DVD of your teaching in the classroom every other month (4 total) beginning in October.  A Supervision Fee of $50 per DVD is required.

After successful completion of Phase I and Phase II, application for full MTPI certification may be made by the completion of the MTPI Application for Certification and payment of the certification fee. MTPI is the progressive, distance-learning affiliate of MTP of WA. All MTPI DVD courses do not hold MACTE accredited status.
