On-Site Courses

MTP of WA’s course options for Level 2-1/2 to 6 years of age are Summer Intensive Course and 10-Month Courses.

Summer Intensive Course

A six and one-half week course starts mid-June. Classes are taught in English; however, Korean interpreters may be provided. Classes are held Monday through Friday, 9:00am – 4:30pm, at MPS Downtown Kent Campus.

10-Month Courses

Courses start in August and end in June. Courses are offered in English and Korean. English-speaking students are encouraged to enroll the International Course, where the class is taught in English. Students enrolled in the International Course must be able to prepare their homework in English. For Korean-speaking students, two locations are currently available. Montessori Teacher Preparation of Washington is approved to grant I-20′s to qualified students. In the last few years, MTP of WA has granted hundreds of I-20′s to students from around the world, including China, Korea, India, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, the Philippines, Turkey, and Taiwan.

The onsite courses of Montessori Teacher Preparation of Washington (Level 2 1/2 to 6 years) hold accredited with stipulation status from the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE). If you have any questions regarding MACTE, please visit http://www.macte.org/.

On-Site Course Requirements

Certification by the Montessori Institute of America will be awarded to all graduates of the entire program.

  • Certificate of attendance at the last day of class.
  • Academic certificate after all the academic course work of 34 written assignments and 10 albums has been completed. (Note: Course work for Montessori training may be completed in languages other than English.)
  • MTP of WA and MIA teaching certificates will be awarded after all course work and internship requirements have been met.
  • Prerequisite: Two years of college or two years’ experience with children in a pre-school setting.

To complete the MIA certification a 720 hour internship must be completed in an approved internship school under the supervision of a certified Montessori teacher. Limited internships in the U.S. are available on a first-come, first-served basis. New international schools may also be approved by MIA. For certification, three field visits by a Field Supervisor must be completed. For more information on Internship and related forms, please visit the “Internship” page.

MTP of WA is authorized under Federal law to enroll non-immigrant alien students. I-20 forms from MTP of WA are available to qualified students. Write for an International Student Application or download the International Student Application Form (ISAF) (see “On-Site Courses”) to qualify for I-20′s which will assist you in receiving a student visa to the U.S. Students may extend their visas to complete a nine month internship in the U.S.

The office administrator will assist students in securing shared, economical housing.

Tuition and Fees

  • $100 – Non-refundable registration fee (due with application)
  • $150 – Materials’ Fee (due on or before first class session)
  • $185 – Student fee (due on or before first class session)
  • $4,000 – Tuition balance (due on or before first class session)
  • TOTAL AMOUNT DUE: $4435.00 USD

Enrollment Instructions

  • Review “On-Site Course Requirements.”
  • Complete a registration form and return it to Montessori Teacher Preparation of Washington (MTP of WA) including a $100 non-refundable registration fee to process your enrollment papers. Please note that International students are required to submit two forms – Registration Form and International Student Application Form (ISAF).
  • Make an appointment for a personal interview with the director of MTP of WA, Mrs. Sharlet McClurkin. As soon as your personal references and transcripts have been received and your interview with Mrs. McClurkin has been held, you will be notified promptly if you have or have not been accepted for the teacher preparation. Once you’re accepted, a Philosophy Notebook with course documentations and guidelines will be given to you.
  • Make payment of $150 Materials Fee and $185 Student Fee on or before the first class session.
  • Once you are accepted, make payment of your full tuition of $4,000, or a 10-month payment plan for US citizens or green card holders.
  • At the time of certification, a $150 certification fee, payable to Montessori Institute of America (MIA), will be required.
