By Jennifer Kim Entering the Montessori Plus classroom on my first day, I was greeted by my gracious instructor, Mrs. McClurkin. I immediately noticed the serene environment. Soft music filled the room. A peaceful atmosphere prevailed. I sat next to Mercy and Gloria, two of my classmates, who have now become close friends. Never could I have imagined the journey this course would take me on. Reflecting back, I see I have developed a much greater appreciation and understanding of the child as a creative and spontaneous learner. I knew coming into this course that I would discover how to educate the child on a spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical level. Never did I imagine that this course would also develop me in these areas as well. All these facets of growth have definitely enriched my life. This past year has made me much more aware of the importance of children, and meeting the needs of their sensitive periods of growth. I have also become increasingly aware of the beauty of the world around me. Endless opportunities to learn have become a regular desire in my life. In addition, I have realized that adults, as well as children, need to be continuous learners. This year has shown me that life can be a constant discovery of who we are and where we live. As a result, I have begun to better appreciate, and take an interest in the smallest details of my life. The more that I understand the Montessori philosophy, the more I love and respect it. The intimate setting of the classroom, along with an instructor who has faith in each of her/his students, has provided for many precious memories. I believe that this year has wonderfully prepared me for an exciting career teaching children.
