The White House's Response to Sharlet McClurkin's Letter

Return to Articles

Dear Mrs. McClurkin,

Mrs. Bush shared with me your letter and asked that I contact you directly about your interest in educating our nation's children.  She welcomes the perspective of people, like you, who obviously care a great deal about this important issue and have taken the time to write and share your concerns.

As a former public schoolteacher, Mrs. Bush knows that one of the most profound responsibilities we as a nation are entrusted with is the education of our children.  She also knows that many education experts agree that we should incorporate stronger pre-reading and vocabulary activities into pre-school programs.

As she travels the country, Mrs. Bush continues to encourage and promote strong cognitive activities and teacher training models in Head Start centers and other pre-schools.  And, she supports President Bush's Early Reading First Program that will provide grants for pre-school programs to implement curricula rich in pre-reading and vocabulary skills--skills that are strong predictors of a child's later success in school.

Each of us has a duty to help our children achieve.  Mrs. Bush believes that through our combined efforts we can help shape America's future. She sends her gratitude and best wishes.

Sincerely,

Anne Heiligenstein
Director of Projects for Laura Bush
